1. "Alban Roe" - Alban Roe was beatified in 1929, hence winning an office of his own. Abbot Matthews of Ampleforth asked me to write a Latin collect for this, and a continuous Latin text divisible into three Nocturn lessons..." 3 pages, 3 sheets.
2. "Preface to an Unpublished Book" - Ampleforth Abbey once had a copy of a rare translation from St. Jerome which interested me so much that I copied it out. An American friend with a deserving small press offered to print this work, and I sent him my MS, but he was immediately overtaken by domestic & financial disaster. I did not hear from him afterwords, & my MS was never returned. Since this episode, the Abbey's original printed copy has been stolen. It may just be worth while to let you have this transcription of my preface."

I hope you'll print the article. I will try & alter it in proof to temper the mind. By the word "Designing" I do not at all mean designing on paper but in the mind. I merely wish to distinguish between art & a work of art. Obviously they are distinct. As for your Persian carpet example:- You say the design "to a family heirloom." In this case you mean of course a design actually transmitted to paper (or some such means of record). Right, but unless the succeeding generations actually themselves appreciate the family design &, so they say, make it their own (just as a Christian receives a creed and yet it is his own creed or he is no Christian) the work done from the design is not a work of art. Love is essential. The Persian carpet makers do in fact put love into the job. The family design is simply a springboard from which to jump. Is this clear? The living quality of their work shows their love. When a family design has outstayed its welcome the work goes dead. This has often happened. Yrs. sincerely Eric Gill."

DESCRIPTION: Contains ALS to WS from the renowned scholar on China, addressed from Austria, as follows - "Songs (from T'ang times onwards) are written with a less strict rhyming than poetry proper; therefore the rhyme categories are fewer in number. For purposes of poetry and song there are only 2 tones "flat" and "oblique." Both poetry & songs generally rhyme flat with flat and oblique with oblique. There is no helpful parallel in Greek. I don't know what the effect of Greek choral lyrics was. A prosody founded on quantity as opposed to stress accent is completely mysterious to me.
